King County WTD - Barton Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Beach Project

Barton Responsibilities
In August 2011, P&M was contracted to provide sub-consultant services to SvR Design Company for proactive Cost Estimating and Critical Path Method Scheduling services for the preliminary design of the Barton CSO (Combined Sewer Overflow) Beach Project. Microsoft Project was the schedule tool used to communicate, plan and monitor the project’s WBS and CPM schedule. P&M also provided construction cost estimates using WinEst estimating software with detailed quantity takeoffs and pricing from a construction project’s conception phase to closeout.

Description
In 2008, King County reported that the Barton CSO facility has four overflows per year on average that discharged a total of four million gallons into Puget Sound off Fauntleroy. King County is working to meet regulations set by the Washington Department of Ecology that require no more than one untreated discharge per year on a long term average and has embarked to design and build green stormwater infrastructure in the Sunrise Heights and Westwood neighborhoods in West Seattle. Green stormwater infrastructure, or GSI, refers to engineered infrastructure used to manage stormwater. Bioswales (infiltration soils, grasses, plants and trees) in the City of Seattle-owned right-of-way will be designed to capture and reduce the amount of peak stormwater flows that would enter the combined sewer system by up to 15 million gallons a day.
